Branford Marsalis

Branford came in after playing the Blue Note and stayed until the end of the show! 2am! We had piles of CDs and were playing all kinds of stuff. It was a blast.

So embarrassing. We were talking about a tune by Toninho Horta on her new CD, and I asked "Who's singing?". Lisa said "ME!". Whoops. I clarified, "Who's playing Bass?". All went fine.

Makoto Ozone

Herbie Hancock

I was only 90 percent terrified to meet this legendary artist. After being live interviewed by a fine DJ, but who knew little of jazz, he gave me the evil eye and asked "What's this interview going to be like?". We entered an interview studio the size of two phone booths and sat about 6 inches apart. I asked about when he recorded Ceora with Lee Morgan. When I said "What drew you to the piano?", he really dug that I asked "what drew you?" as opposed to "Why did you want to play?" He told me about meeting Miles the first time, and his Ferrari.

Yoshiko Kishino

By now I knew to emphasize the artist's new CD and tour. OTJ. We had a good time talking about her influences and things. The interview CD: "Waltz For Debbie" - 1999. Did I mention she likes Bill Evans?

Michel Petrucciani

Born in Orange, France and living in NYC, he had a Brooklyn/French accent.I was very new at interviewing, but his gracious way carried us through. CD: "Both Worlds" - 1997. I think he got in some hot water for coming to the station without his handlers. Adventurous. Like his music.
